Announcing the Salute with Service Winner, Jack Austin

For May’s Military Appreciation Month, we teamed up with B93.9 for their Salute with Service project. Aimed at completing a needed outdoor living project for a local veteran, B93.9 collected nominees from across the Greater Triangle to receive special services from Archadeck.

We are pleased to introduce you to the winning local veteran, Jack Austin.

Jack served in Vietnam. As of late, his health is declining, and he requires a wheelchair to get around. This past winter, Jack was diagnosed with a brain tumor, creating further challenges for him and his devoted wife, Alice.

Our design team recently had the pleasure of visiting Jack and Alice to assess how we could help them improve their outdoor living space. Their existing screened porch is a lovely retreat, but with a large and steep threshold, it is not easily accessible for Jack’s wheelchair. Our goal: to help Jack enjoy the outdoors more frequently and more comfortably.

The Archadeck team is ready to transform this outdoor living space to meet Jack’s needs. First, we’ll make the porch more accessible by adjusting the threshold so a wheelchair can pass more easily. We’ll also increase functionality by upgrading the screened porch to a three-season room with the addition of Eze-Breeze® windows. This will minimize pollen in the spring and allow Jack and Alice to enjoy the space more in cooler weather. We’ll also install a television and a ceiling fan in the new three-season porch to add to their usability and enjoyment – almost like adding a new room to the house.

As part of our project, we will upgrade the exterior of the porch as well as the interior. We will do this by adding Fortress rails and TimberTech low-maintenance decking to the stairs and landing. We will also wrap the exterior of the porch with PVC to complete its low-maintenance transformation to a longer-lasting structure.

Our team is honored to have met Jack and learned about his story. We are eager to get to work improving the functionality, beauty, and longevity of his Raleigh porch. Stay tuned for more information and pictures about the completed project. Now, it’s time to get to work!
