Is It Time to Upgrade Your Aging or Underutilized Deck?

Are you using your deck less often than you planned or once did? Maybe it’s time for a renovation.

Common reasons for an underutilized deck are that it is too small, requires too much maintenance, is in disrepair, or doesn’t meet your lifestyle needs. If any of these reasons ring true and you’d like to make a change, Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham and the Greater Triangle can help reinvent your outdoor living space and get you back outside again.

Is Your Deck Too Small?

Whether you have a large family, love to entertain, or your deck is sized is more like a landing, a deck that’s too small just won’t do. Extending the size of your deck is one option that may meet your needs. Other options include converting your deck to an open or screened porch or adding a patio. Deck and patio or deck and porch combination projects are very popular among our clients. Just because you are starting with a deck, doesn’t mean you have to stay with only a deck.

Does Your Deck Require Too Much Maintenance?

To keep up the quality of pressure-treated pine decks, they typically require annual pressure washing, staining, painting or sealing. If your deck’s substructure is in good shape, you may want to consider redecking (replacing the floor, railing, and steps) with low-maintenance composite boards. Using composite decking like AZEK and TimberTech is a great way to lighten the deck’s maintenance and upgrade its look. With synthetic decking, you never have to stain or seal. And, your new deck will last at least three times as long as wood decking and will look great for decades.

Is Your Aging Deck in Disrepair?

If you begin to see split posts in the railing, notice some wiggly boards, or become concerned about the safety of your deck, it is wise to contact a qualified professional to complete a full deck inspection. (In fact, it’s a good idea to have your deck inspected every few years – even if it looks to be in good shape – as there may be underlying issues you cannot see.) Once you know what you are working with, you can determine how best to move forward, such as redecking if the substructure is still in good shape or designing and building a whole new structure.
