What To Expect On A Re-Decking Project

Re-Decking is a type of renovation in which the existing substructure of a deck is reused, and the decking boards, railings, and steps are replaced. Re-decking is only possible if a deck’s substructure is sound and up to code.

Once it is determined you are eligible for a re-deck, here are the steps we take for the smoothest construction flow and best quality results.

Demo Day! At Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham, our demo day should really be called “deconstruction day.” Unlike the smashing of walls and cabinets on HGTV, we take your deck apart in a methodical manner. Since the substructure will be reused, we make sure to preserve its integrity during demolition. We begin by carefully removing the railings and old decking boards. Then we finish by removing the stairs.

In this project, you can see the carpenter using one of the old wooden deck boards to pry up the remaining boards.

Review the existing framework. Once the deck boards and railings are gone, we review your existing deck frame more closely to make sure everything is secure, fastened, level, and up to code. Any adjustments that are needed will be made now. Alterations could include adding supports and structure, replacing any old fasteners, and installing new waterproof flashing at house attachment.

Identify railing placement. Next, we measure and mark the deck for the new rail posts. Depending on your deck railing choice, we may need to place your posts in different positions than the previous railing. The type of railings you select also determines whether we will install the railing posts before or after we put down the new decking boards.

In this project, the client chose black aluminum railings to replace the wooden ones. These railings were installed after the decking boards.

Install new decking boards. Whether the decking is pressure-treated pine, AZEK composite, or Brazilian hardwood, the Archadeck process ensures you’ll get the highest quality deck installation possible resulting in a beautiful, long-lasting deck. Our crews are well-trained in the best practices for spacing and fastening, including using hidden fasteners for composite decks.

This client chose TimberTech Terrain composite decking in Brown Oak.

Build the deck stairs. As part of the re-decking process, the deck stairs will be completely rebuilt and re-decked. Typically, the stairs remain in the same place, but clients do have an opportunity to move them to a different location if desired.

Install the railings. If not installed prior to the deck boards, railings are the last thing we build or install to re-deck your structure. There are many options for railings; a simple change can have a dramatic effect.

For this project, the client chose Azek Impressions Express in black to replace the wooden railings. The sleek new railings add a fresh new look to the deck and reduce obstruction of the view (black railings allow for better viewing of the landscape as they are more likely to blend in with the scene).

Add deck accessories. If your deck design features any additional accessories, we will integrate them now. From custom built-in deck benches to deck lighting and outdoor kitchens, your deck renovation is not complete until these much-anticipated features are added.
